Tomorrow, I am planning on seeing Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, which I am actually really excited to go and check out. Something I really wanted to do before I checked out the new film was see the first film Ghost Rider. Now I did see the original film, but this was back in 2007, when the film first came out, and I was somewhat young at the time and I either don't remember much from the film, or I dont think my opinion would be the same as I remembered the film (yes, I kind of loved it when I was a kid). I was really curious how bad the film reportedly was, but I actually kind of enjoyed the film, surprise, surprise! Ghost Rider is about Johnny Blaze, a stunt motorcycle rider who has sold his soul to the Devil to try to save his father. Well it did not work, and now he has nothing. Twenty years later, the Devil is now calling for him to finally become, The Ghost Rider! Now now, I did not love Ghost Rider, but I had found more enjoyment then a lot of people did. That said, I had a lot of flaws with the film in general and it does not live up to the potential of a Ghost Rider film. I will start with the positive. The action scenes in this film are really impressive. Not only do they look good, but they have some real creativity to them. Seeing the Ghost Rider use his chain to swing a helicopter around is only an example of the films great action. Also, I really liked the tone the film had. The film really did not take itself to seriously and that is what helped the film with some of its faults. Their were even a couple moments, notably in the first half that had me laughing and they were intentional jokes. The cast here was pretty mixed. Nick Cage is a charming lead, and has always, is having a lot of fun with his role in the film. He creates some fun improvisational moments here or there, most notably, the jelly bean martini. Sam Elliot also gave a good performance, all he had to do is sound like a bad ass, and with his voice, that is easy for him. Now the rest of the cast was pretty bad. Eva Mendes is pretty terrible. She had a couple of really cringe worthy scenes. Wes Bentley basically just does the same thing in American Beauty, here he is suppose to be the villain, and hes not menacing at all. Also, the actors that played young Johnny and Young Eva Mendes were pretty bad. The films major problem is the films length. Ghost Rider is about two hours long, that's about a half hour too long. The film would have a lot of energy going after an action scene, then it would just completely die out. It just ruined what was going on and made the pacing terrible. Like I mentioned, some of the writing here is atrocious. I can pass over one or two bad lines, but at least every five minutes their were lines that made me just laugh my ass of. Overall, when Ghost Rider is at its best, its a really fun film, when its at its worst, its pretty awful. I average that out to a. Rental
